Trollsjön – Rissjaure
If you are not really ready for a week’s hike but still have taken you to Abisko, we recommend you go a little further. About 28 km northwest of Abisko you will find Trollsjön, or Rissajaure as it is also called. In Sami, it means “the lake that glitters like fire”, which gives reason for the name. This is Sweden’s clearest lake with a visibility depth all the way to the bottom of 36 meters. The hike starts directly by the road and is about 10 km round trip.
Abisko National Park
Abisko National Park is located about 100 km west of Kiruna and can be reached here you can easily get by car and bus along the E10 or by train to Abisko Tourist Station. The national park is open all year round and is said to be one of the world’s best places for the northern lights. Are you visiting the national park during the summer months of May, June, July or August there is midnight sun which means that the sun never goes down and it is bright around the clock. An absolutely fantastic experience.
Kungsleden Abisko – Nikkaluokta
From Abisko you can also hike the northern part of the Kungsleden, Abisko – Nikkaluokta. A real adventure of 108 km that is estimated to take about 7 days to go. Along the trail there are three mountain cabins with shops, Abiskojaure, Alesjaure and Sälka. The Swedish Tourist Association classifies the Abisko – Nikkaluokta trail as 1 of Sweden’s total of 12 signature trails. What characterizes a signature trail is its beautiful nature and the characteristics of its part of Sweden.
